The James River Watershed Flood Observations

  • Current gauges: Based on the NOAA Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service, current gauges show that across the James River Watershed there is little - no threat of flooding.

  • Historical Flood / Drought Data: Since 1816, there have been five floods in the proximity of Richmond, VA that have been classified as "Major" floods - the flood of 1936, 1937, 1969, 1985, and 1972. 1972 is still remembered today by many in the area as especially devastating. 1972 flooding was brought on by Hurricane Agnes and waters crested at 28 feet according to the Richmond Westham gauge. Following these floods, flood walls were completed in 1995 to better protect the city.
